Re: Moon and Naut--

Ciel, I haven't read that, but have put it on my (ever expanding, lol) list! Off the cuff I would say this: the changes that have taken place (and continue to take place) in the 'American psyche' (or the 'psyche' of any culture) occur as the inevitable result of the changes in the material culture. Expressed in the most simple terms, there is a dialectical relationship between what we do and how we think, one simultaneously influencing the other.

And while that is true for any society throughout history, in 'modern', highly differentiated societies that process tends to accelerate and become more complex. It is one of the causes of alienation (estrangement) and what Freud in his last book called the 'discontent' in civilization (though Freud's emphasis was a different one, of course.)

At the very least, many people find it psychologically difficult to know what 'values' to adopt, and to 'locate' themselves in a buffet-style culture...

Moon and Naut--

One point that really cannot be stressed enough is that the mind is complex, it is a trove of mysteries, and as Flo Conway & Jim Siegelman concluded in their 1978 book "SNAPPING" *(about sudden personality change, and how people fall into cult thinking), when it comes to messing about with the mind, we should be very, very cautious because we really don't know what we are doing, or what we are doing it to, or how it's going to react.

And in spite of knowing all that, and doing all that with our minds, they (and consciousness) remain deeply mysterious...
