Per your reactions...
I've added the note about the poem's origin. Thanks to all for reading! - Chris

Thanks, guys!
I appreciate all the encouraging comments. I actually wrote this in more of a prose format originally. I changed it to read more like poetry for this posting. I'm glad you all enjoyed it. Thanks again!

Voice of the Mute
I agree with NiteTide, I hear the poem with different ears now that I have read your note. The poem was very good even without the note, but the note brought the whole thing into instant clarity. Good job.

Years ago, I actually dated a woman who was made mute from a car accident..
...and I think of the frustration they must feel in a world where no one speaks their language.
Except maybe the few who know sign language.
I personally feel they should teach sign language in the high-schools, or offer it as an elective.
Very touching poem and 'shout-out'.

Oh wow, the poem means loads more now with the note. That is a fantastic tribute. When I was younger, I used to be in classes with a deaf person...that might not be the same, but I think the feelings might be. I was constantly amazed at her ability to stay at the top of the class and take notes while lip reading. In the end she made it to Harvard, and I can't wait to see her at my school reunion to see what amazing things she has done.

Perhaps I should have put in a footnote...
This was an actual experience in my life. There was a mute student in one of my classes in college. I sat behind him one day watching him, and this poem was born. I'm glad it made you think; he certainly had the same effect on me... - Chris

silence is golden ... even if it seems harsh sometimes.
I totally don't know what I am talking about but I loved the poem :)

...in other words...silence speaks volumes? If that is the case, you are so very right, my friend. Silence says far more than words ever can. I even think silence is far more heartbreaking than cruel words. This was a fantastic poem - got my mind thinking!!
