hahahaha! Here, maybe this will help a little (LOL): They generally use animals in relation to the Chinese calendar. These characters are things they learn as young children and every Japanese person knows his or her animal character. To the Japanese, each animal is directly connected to certain personality traits.
Now, for the Monkey on the dolphin sign: The year of the monkey signifies cleverness, ingenuity, skillfulness, inventiveness, and originality. So, if you think about it, having the monkey over a hardware store makes sense - for if you want to be as clever as a monkey who convinces a dolphin for a ride - then you should be smart and shop there. Get it? LOL.
