Love is a powerful gift
The lucky ones are born into a loving family but as you say it can be hard when you leave to look for love out in the harsh hard world.
To use a cliché: you must love yourself before anyone else can love you.
Cinderella and Snow White had their animals and dwarfs to love them before they met the prince, so they were already filled with love and pure-hearted, able to resist the resentment from evil stepmothers. No prince would take a second look at them if they were all depressed, bitter and begging for love.
The love from a child is so pure and they do not know judgement (yet). If they grow up being loved they also expect others to love them back in return and will not let anyone treat them bad, because they know they do not desirve that.
If you are with someone who does not show you love and respect, don't accept it, don't let it break you. Find a way to come close to yourself and start to love you for you. Then you will find the strength to resist the resentment and who knows - maybe even be able to change the beast... (if not, then move on)
Let your precious son grow up in a loving environment - don't pass your childhood on to him.
You are getting stronger by the minute, now that you have found the meaning of love for yourself.
