Well.....I recommend either getting one made or buying the store brand. Although I am a brand person when it comes to most electronics...when it comes to computers I like the store brands...so essentially the 'no names.' Why? Well, because they're cheaper than actual brand names, they still cost less with the added insurance (which you should get!), and especially because it has never broken on me in years, unlike my other computers. Hope your computer shopping goes well! (Also, make sure you get a pentium rather than an AMD ...just because pentiums will run faster than the AMDs...but if you want to go with cheaper then get the AMD - they run slower but it won't kill you

I had mine put together by a geek friend of mine, and it's working very well. But I'll be getting a new laptop, and I think I'll go with Dell or Toshiba for that - basically on the recommendation of my friend, who apparently knows what he's talking about...
Incidentally, he doesn't like Vista yet, and recommends XP Professional, if you can still get it...

Know what you want to do. Ask the salesperson if it does everything that you want. Remember that Vista is newer than much of the software and photo/video websites. Make sure that you can post what you want. Also choose your virus and ad blocker software carefully. They can block streams that you want to view from some websites. Wacky
Mr. T recently made the transition to a MAC and although I'm still on a PC I have to admit I'm developing a bit of MAC envy - never crashes, virus immunce, and pretty
easy to use/set up.

I just got a new Dell. I opened the site and called for my boys. Then they put it together. In order to keep the price somewhat human I told them that they had to chip in with 1/6 each, so it ended up in a fair price. I don't know what it can do, just that it can deal with all the new pc-games and on-line games. I just need my Office to work and I am happy :)

Whacky...
The axiom used to be, buy as much as you can afford, but anymore, that isn't necessarily so. The computer I have is one my son built for me. I am lucky to have such a talented son, I know. He put all the stull in to do what I wanted and left out the stuff I don't need. If you get one with Windows Vista, get the premium home version and make sure it have enough power to run Vista. I think most of the complaints about Vista come from running it on a computer that is not capable of running it properly. Do you do video editing, either stills or movies? Movies take up a buch of hard drive to edit. Read the computer mags and even Consumer Digest. Remmber, there is no one computer expert, only lots of helpful folks.
Dell sounds like a good way to go.

What are you using now? I always buy Dells, the last desktop I bought didn't cost me much because I was tired of getting viruses in expensive computers, I have just been taking classes on computers, but as far as what to look for I cant tell you. Talk to a reliable computer geek, I guess it depends on what you are using it for
