Actually, metabolic rate is the rate at which cells consume fuel, so it's the rate of burning sugar and fat. That's why warm-blooded animals have to eat more for their size.

To comment. This difference in warm blood/cold blooded animals is caused by a difference in metabolic metbolism rate. This sounds to me like the official scientific language for "more friction in the blood vessels" which would be a middle school teacher's way of simplifying.
