JanesO, oh yes. The escape I like to recall is the heroism and American perfection you get reading Winds of War by Wouk. Truly escapist fiction where you can learn about the political world.

You are right, neither candidate is perfect. And I too like Sarah. However, my fear is that she will have to withdraw, exposing McCain as reckless and out of touch.

I'm at a loss as to why the Left is making this crazy stuff up when they have the the nude photo. They must be saving it for some reason.

Re: Re: kingmi, it is my understanding that the man who came up w/ the idea

Kingmi, I agree with some of what you've written here.  We could have done so much more to protect our borders, and to curtail hiring of illegals.  We have only ourselves to blame for that one.  And I think you are correct that we likely have the lesser of two "evils" (so to speak) in hoards of Mexicans coming over the border vs Muslims.

I am puzzled by your ending comments regarding GOP me first mentality, Abramohoff etc.  I am not aware of this (I confess to having tuned out the A scandal).  To say that Sarah Palin is not honest, does not have integrity, is not conservative -- I think you're stretching it there, unless you know something the rest of us don't.  I will check out the book you recommmend but must say that I am leary regarding some of what you've written.   For example, our choices now are McCain or Obama.  And you're implying that someone like Obama has integrity and honesty when I assume you know his association with the likes of Rezco, Ayres (sp?) and Rev Wright?  He's been bosom buddies with corrupt and/or hateful men.  That said, I'd be the first to say that McCain isn't the model of perfection.

Quite frankly, I am sick of the whole election cycle. I idolize neither party and none of the candidates.  They are all politicians with messy, imperfect histories.  My hope and trust is not in them.  (OK, I confess, I do really like Palin!)

Which reminds me.  There is a wonderful movement of the Brahms "Ein Deutches Requiem" (which I have sung in the original German -- the ONLY way to sing it!) which loosely translated says "my hope is in God."  Of course, combined with the German lyrics (if I recall -- "ich hoffe auf dich") and the incredible ethereal sound of the music -- ahhhhhhh.  Give me this any day over the abysmal quagmire of political machinations.

Re: kingmi, it is my understanding that the man who came up w/ the idea

JanesO,

Thank you for sharing this video.  I watched it carefully.  Without studying it and taking notes, I can say that:

1.  we all agree that Bush-supported comprehensive immigration legislation is needed.  However, it was defeated by opportunistic GOP politicians who are now getting their asses handed to them;

2.  it is a "straw man" argument to state that the reason we take in immigrants is to help out the third world; to be Christian; to care.  We are taking in immigrants -- and we need them -- to offset the zero-population growth we are at.  Mexican fertility rates are higher than Caucasion, and we are restoring the dream of Social Security by stopping the ratio of worker to recipient which has gone from 50 to one, to 25 to one, to 12 to one.  By 2050 in will be at 3 to one.

3.  European nations also face zero growth and are forced to take in millions of Islamic citizens who refuse to assimilate, are raised on a hate-based religion, and many of whom like the idea of taking over Europe and making it a Muslim state.

4.  Mexican nationals are hard-working Catholics who want only to provide a better life for their families.  We are damned lucky to have them, I don't care how they got here.  When the Obama-Clinton Immigration plans are passed by a Democratic congress we will have new limits, stronger border protection, new schools and hospitals, and most important, a new source of tax revenue.

5.  The federal border was unprotected where the influx of refugees gained access to the United States.  Federal government, according to the founding fathers, was intended to do for americans that which americans are not able to do for themselves.  This is also an important conservative belief.  Yet, we share culpability with the transgressors by not enforcing that border.  So, to shout down Rudy and John during the debates, as that ignoramus Romney did, by using the Right's one-word battlecry "amnesty" was self-defeating.

I'm so happy that America stood up to the Right wing and called their bluff.  I left the GOP because this me first mentality which started with Abramohoff, and is visible clear through Sarah Palin, is not integrity, not honesty, not reform, not conservative.  It's not even rational.

I encourage you to do a fearless moral inventory, JanesOpinion, and walk away from self-promotion and -aggrandizement while you still can.  It's rotted out, leaking, unsteady, and immoral, this new GOP.

I have been recommending a book (and outlining it in my GLOBAL QUESTON OF THE DAY blog since 2004.  It is called the

to pray for torrential rain during the Demo convention was somewhat joking.  Still, it was in bad taste, and poor judgment.

Hey, on a separate subject, I would be very curious to  receive your feedback on a video.  See link.  It will be under 15 minutes.  I thought it was quite good, but I know I can be so biased sometimes as to become blindsided.  Thanks!!
