P.S. Not the 'Great Mac' so much as the 'Gopher.'

Believe me, Sira, he is far from tidy. Often I am reminded of his mother, whose bedroom was like a pigsty. She had a sign on it when she was a teenager - 'Danger Stranger; No entry.' As if we would!
We aren't as close to the border as I made it sound. It's a two hour journey each way, and to me it is still a big deal, with me checking the oil and water in the car and filling up the gas tank. You know what I mean, double checking the tyre pressures and ticking off all the boxes on my 'cross-border' list. Even then I get nervous at both borders.
When I first arrived in Canada I couldn't believe it when I discovered that 'nipping out for a coffee' involved a three hour journey. Hey? maybe I'm becoming more Canadian than I thought.

He sounds like a neat kid
Frustrating at times, maybe. But I think most kids are at that age!
I was more surprised at the casual discussion of going state-side for a quick trip--over here, going to the states is a vacation type event, one that requires packing and planning. I suppose you're close to the border, to be able to make a day trip. Daughter is lucky, to have the Great Mac close by!
Can't wait for the rest of the story!

John Macnab, you are a wonderful grandpa. You only let them (Ell, daughter, grandson, etc) take advantage of you because you love doing for them. Great fun reading your posts.

Pat
I like him too - mostly. We have a strange relationship where he acts like a wise adult one minute and then reverts to being a teenager. He is as smart as a whip. The spilled mocha was masking the scent of a rusty car and my rusty brain.

So, Mr. Mac. Sounds like this kid's a chip off granddad's block....
The apple falls near the tree or something. Lucky thing it wasn't just another ordinary boring trip or we couldn't identify with the mocha coffee fragrance that masks whatever new car smell might have remained. I like that kid! :)pat
