What a timely and important post! And much of what you say applies to my country as well, although our crisis seems less profound, less dramatic, at least on the surface.
You mention the thirst (although you don't actually use that word) for entertainment. I have been toying with the idea of doing a series on it, something I might call 'The Entertainment Culture'...
