- Go to Civilization in Decline: Spears Vs. Newman
Thanks for commenting, Ciel, Sammy, Muley, Naut and ZEN!!! ZEN, what can I say - I missed you, girl! Hope you are hearing lots of good and happy things from your daughter. And I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone in my prognosis of today's media. Zen, I write for a former Tribune paper - Newsday - and find my travel articles on the Chic. Trib website. But not for long, because Newsday was sold to..........CABLEVISION! No more need to read, folks, and no more nasty, complex, in-depth reporting either. Ten second attention spans??? Zen, you're giving the average American way too much credit. That's an eon for some. Grrrrrr - don't get me started!

hey mal (yeah, i know. long time, yada yada).
The Chicago Tribune just changed the format/layout of its paper, complete w/ BOLD headlines that look more like PEOPLE magazine with shortened versions of various news items. It's obvious they are pandering to the "I have a 10 second attention span so give it to me in 5" crowd. Luckily, I stopped relying on any one publication for my info. re: world/national/local issues. Hope all is well in your world (all things consdiered).

You're so right! Where does one
start? It would be nice to think this was an aberration - but I know it wasn't! On the whole, these papers know their readers well, and give them exactly what they want...

I don't understand the running of some articles myself! Why society gets so enamored with celebrities is beyond my comprehension! Great awareness. Happy High Holidays to you too! sammy

I'm insulted and digusted
when the news machines and the people who run them lay out so clearly what they think we are most interested in, what will sell their papers and programs.
There is one particular news channel whose 11pm newscast I never watch, because the first 15 minutes is nothing but body-count, local tragedies that have no particular instructive value or relevance to anyone but the people involved, and they probably don't welcome these stories either.
