I have a friend who loves to predict this democracy is collapsing.
She says nearly every time we talk politics that "no democracy has ever lasted more than two hundred years," and when I point out we've had the idea and the will to form a more perfect union since the 1700s, and won our freedom from the monarchy in 1776 -- which means 232 official years, her statement is not quite correct. But then, she says, we're overdue. She's ninety, still drives her car and handles her own affairs. So I guess she knows something about being overdue. Until this political campaign started, I was feeling discouraged about our stability. One candidate started talking hopefully, pointing out our history of triumph over adversity... One little candle beats the darkness.
