Jemmie, I am confused...

You are actually typing in your edits? Screw that! Unless she's willing to pay double. I had a VERY bad experience with type-editing and now, unless specifically requested in writing and with acceptance of a significant surcharge, I edit ONLY on paper.

Editing is not typesetting. Typesetters MAKE corrections. Editors MARK corrections. Sound to me like you need to gussy up your rate sheet so she knows what she's paying for. And if a client changes rules in the middle of the game, it's time for a conference along these lines:

"Jane, we need to clarify some points about what you expect from me and what I am supposed to be doing for you. When we began this project together, my understanding was that I would edit in APA format, style the paper, and do grammatical corrections. I'd send you the edited copies, you'd make additions, and send it back to me. However, what seems to be happening now is that you are sending me text and telling me to add it in here and there, and you are telling me how to style the paper. If I am going to be both editing and typesetting, we will need to make some adjustments to the [project price / hourly rate], as my charges for editing are different from my charges for typesetting.

And if the style and format are going to be other than APA, we need to decide that now, so that I don't waste my time or your money making unnecessary changes to your dissertation. Maybe you'd like to modify the APA style to your own taste? If so, let's make a list of the things that you want to be different from the regular style. We can always revisit the list and amend it, but this way we can make sure that both of us are operating under the same set of guidelines for this project."

I can e-mail you a sample of my rate sheet if you want to see how I handle it, although your rates might need to be higher or lower than mine, depending on the going price in HI and your expertise.
