Well, it may throw a different perspective on the poem if I tell you that "you" is who I was and "I" is who I am growing to be...

That is one of the interpretations of the poem, there are others from my perspective too

Sounds sad to me, Lion - your love not being embraced or accepted. And that’s always a difficult position to be in but there is determination in your words.
