Your posts are very interesting and informative.
Where I grew up I didn't know any Jewish people, or anything about them. My college roomate is Jewish and I had no idea for a month, until I saw him wear a yamika (sp?) on Yom Kappur. By the way I encountered Wm. Shatner getting off one of our airplanes for a local Star Trek convention. He is 5' 6" at best, maybe shorter. They must have used great camera angles on him like they do Tom Cruise. lol

That should be 'required blood product'
My grammar and spelling are terrible in those posts. I have just woken up.  I should go back to bed.

Kabu Bryce Courtney is not Aussie

He is a south African first and if you have read his wonderful novels The Power of One and its sequel you would know. He came to Australia in the 80's. Life was not easy as he had a son with a rare blood bleeding disorder that requires blood product if he had any bumps or falls. This son contracted HIV in the early part of the 80's before they tested blood given to people as thoroughly as they do now.

This son later developed full blown Aids.  Bryce Courtney wrote about it and it is called April Fool's Day. Very sad. You need boxes of tissues to read it. He is an Australian now but I would say he is an author of international fame.

Sorry I meant to say when we visited an Aunt in Brisbane
on boarder's weekends. She is a lovely 93 year old but dear she was an excentric pain to visit in those days. The only highlight was the two TV shows mentioned.

I ALSO loved star trek and had a thing for Spock

It must have been the ears but I also liked the 'logical way' Spock thought. I did know about the hands and the priestly blessing but not that Kirk was Jewish. Learn something new every day.

We only got to watch it when we came to the city or when I was at boarding school one of the highlights was that we got to watch Star Trek and Dr Who. I do wonder if the Time Lords have any Jewish connections?

Thank you Mal for reminding me about Star Trek, I used to love watching it. I was never aware about the Jewish angle though, so that was very interesting information.

Did you ever read a little book written by Bryce Courtney/
It's called "the family frying pan". He's an Aussie author, and it is the story of his wife's grandmother who wandered across Europe from Russia.

On the surface, positive images in movies and on television seem insignificant, but they can have a profound influence on public perception of peoples unlike themselves. It's amazing how much power television has. Also a little frightening.

I always thought the "live long and prosper" gesture was a variation of the "peace," index and middle finger gesture, prevalent in the late sixties when the show was filmed. Learn something new everyday.

If you want to really get deep with the Trekkie mythology, Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy's characters represented the three aspects of human personality. Dr. McCoy was all emotion and Spock was pure logic (notice how the two bickered in almost every episode), but more often than not, neither of their points of view would achieve the desired goals. It took Kirk, blending aspects of both logic and emotion, to win the day.

Yes, this confirms I am indeed a geek.

This is an excellent post. I can see you would prefer the intellectual one.

I have often argued that you relate to people whose attributes are closer t yours. This is a case in point. No one has to say. You just naturally gravitate.

I did not know this! Live long and prosper indeed! Regarding my poem, I have been listening to my daughter all week! Too cool that it worked out the way it did! It is wonderful that it fit either sex! lol Have a great day Mal! sammy

I certainly liked Mr. Spock. I have a thing for brains over looks, although good looks don't hurt. Thanks for stopping by and your comment on my 'new home'. I certainly know how to be cautious regarding artist's renderings of future developments and I won't commit to anything before I have visited the place and seen how far they are already along, if at all. Will have to 'squeeze in' a trip to Morocco somehow this year, but New York first.

I have to agree with you my dear!
There was certainly a certain charm to Dr Spock, whether it was his speech mannerisms or his pointy ears I have no idea; all I know is that I was and am an avid fan and that he is my main point of attraction; I have to admit though to being surprised to hear that Cap'n Kirk is Jewish - as you point out I, too, thought he is of Irish descent! Just goes to show what is said about appearances is an absolute truth! Many blessings and thanks - I particularly enjoyed ths post
