My homeschooled 12 year old is just learning cursive...because she wants to. When she does her letters, I just tell her to go ahead and follow the book, but then add her own creativity to it. She is coming up with some beautiful looking letters!

Thanks for an interesting post that reminded me of when I started grammar school in England (aged 11), the first thing they gave us was a hand-writing course in which we learnt how to write cursive letters.

For some reason...
...in college, I found it easier and quicker to take notes not using cursive, and writing in such a hurry totally destroyed my handwriting. But, like you, I go back to cursive occasionally so as not to lose it altogether.

Quite a job to try teaching handwriting!
We are given mixed messages. Do it this way. Let the little dear express his individuality through his handwriting. Ey, ey ey---
