I don't know what it matters what the grave stone looks like
as long as it is tasteful. I've know people that decorate the grave with flowers and ribbons weekly. Then again headstones are for the living.

Apparently this dear lady.....
considered her idea of a gravestone as a tribute to her loved one. There are however rules, rules, and more rules and like them or not, we have to abide by them. It will all work out and we'll live happily ever after.....I hope! :)

Churchyards are the equivalent of landfills. The dust that thou art has been returned to! But, for All Saints night, the grave must look superb! Its all ego!

Always rules...even in death....
...and I agree with you...pretty crazy and pointless. When my sister died suddenly we knew the one song she would like at her funeral...Ave Maria. We were told by a grim-faced nun, who was the music director of the church, that Ave Maria was not an 'appropriate' funeral song. As we were all numb to begin with, we sadly accepted that fact but it added hurt to hurt.

What about a touch of civil disobedience? Poor woman, she must have had a reason for wanting a gravestone shaped like an open book!

Is there a reason why they came up with this “rule”?

I think some people overdo it on the decorating of their loved ones graves.
