I will pay money to go see Susan Boyle in concert
before any Latest American Idol, before Sarah Brightman even, who is not at all taxing to the eyes and also has a fabulous voice.

Jan, I think there is that element of the press
that chooses to take the cynical, unkind view, like anyone who has to find something wrong with anything or anyone that many people like. That kind of press is for those kind of people: they can only feel superior by putting down everyone else.

BE HONEST - Given two equally talented singers, both with equally superb singing voices, one young and beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, the other middle-aged and shapeless, which of the two would you find more attractive to watch on stage?

I'm amazed that Susan Boyle has found fame even in the US! She has a spectacular voice, but some of the comments in the Press over here have been so unkind.

You're so right! Although it is also true that when it comes to 'serious' singing (opera and lieder), appearance is definitely secondary to voice. There are good examples of plain (and sometimes rather obese) opera singers with divine voices, and nobody cares about their looks...

So true... I actually found myself being gobsmacked too... and then ashamed. Ashamed that I had the same expections as everybody else. You are so used to seeing that the stars have the "whole package". You have to be beautiful and a great dancer if you want to be a great singer - duh!
