They are really awful! I've set them off a couple of times in my working life; the noise is so awful that you can easily forget everything.

Oops! One morning I went into the restaurant that I work at to take inventory with the manager at 3:00 in the morning. While we were in the walk-in, I asked him where the alarm was in there, in case I ever needed to know. He showed me, but said he didn't know how to set it off. He prodded at it, and apparently set it off. It's a silent alarm, so we didn't know until a swat team showed up about five minutes later, calling the phone and pounding on the door. They made us stand up front for about ten minutes while about eight of them searched the whole building. I thought it was pretty hilarious, my manager didn't see the humor.
