Yes precisesly! it's not merely a question of bad manners, it's about not doing the job they're elected and paid to do.

Without getting into the question of 'good' or 'bad manners', 'twittering' during a parliamentary session is not so much a question of manners, but one of contempt for the work these people were elected to do, the people who elected them and the entire institution of parliament...one would hope the electorate takes note and, come the next election, throws the twitterers out...

All I know is that good manners does not cost anything!

Good manners do seem to have gone by the wayside. Wonder if they will make a return.

Good manners are for everyone, everywhere, we all need them.

Re: I love Twitter
The point was that they were so absorbed in twittering that they forgot to concentrate on the debate, or whatever, in question; so not paying attention to whoever was trying to get everybody's attention could be interpreted as bad manners.

Deplorably, good manners have gone out the window. What I hate most is when I get in the elevator in the morning, say "hi, hallo, or good morning" and get no reply at all. Just disgusted stares, because I interrupted the other occupants from staring at their text messages or writing some.

What I have always considered to be good manners are definitely lacking in this day and age.  But, who cares.  I try not to get too uptight about the way other people live their lives.  I just continue to practice what I was taught to be good manners.

I love Twitter
but it is just a medium. Good Manners should be a universal aim we all strive for.

I think Twittering is fun, especially for people like politicians who prbably don't have mush time for a full blog. You can pick up lots of good tips from Twitters. Long may they continue!

Twittering, texting, using a cell phone in a restaurant,
scratching yourself, passing gas, not paying attention -- all a bit rude. All of the above (except maybe passing gas) while driving a car are downright stupid and dangerous.

A very relative term I think! Don't know if you've ever experienced this, but in the Indian context, some things that I would consider good manners are considered "western" concepts! But some manners are basic, and should be followed, isn't it!  What interesting links you forward Betty--must take a lot of time and effort; thanks! Take care. Nita.
