Bottled water is not for me anymore. It's a waste of money. As for littering...why are some people so lazy.

Interesting subject Elinjo.

Re: wileyJohn
Interesting you say that WileyJohn. We would have an even bigger litter problem here if it were not for all the poor people who go round collecting returnable plastic/glass bottles and beer cans and claiming the deposits at the supermarkets. If the community would just offer them payment other collected litter it would be a boon for the environment and good help for the collectors themselves.

Elinjo

Here in Canada we have one of the largest fresh water supplies in the world, but even here we sometimes have problems in certain areas, often related to pollution...

And I completely agree with you on the bottled-water plague - it's silly and hugely harmful to the environment. For a while I contributed a lot to the problem - I always had a bottle in my car. But I 'saw the light' and gave up buying bottled water a couple of years ago. I still have a bottle in the car, but I refill it from the tap...

I recently just gave up bottled water. Quite a timely post. I come from an area of Maryland that has great tap water and is way cheaper.

I love the well water here, it really is nice to drink and it comes out of
the tap so cold, but my hair hates it. The minerals just make my hair stand straight on end.

Wonderful to read you luv, and I'm happy I have my own water well. I don't see anything wrong with the plastic bottles myself. There should be a cash back policy to return the bottles to be recycled and fines for littering with them. Im sure we could help support the homeless who would pick the bottles up if they new they'd get 5c each every time they brought the bottles back.

Interesting post
I drink tap water all the time but even here in the east of England there are many who would prefer to drink bottled water, despite the fact that it definitely does not match the purification standards required of our water company Anglian Water

Re:
I lived in France for three months and although the French in general are very suspicious of tapwater I drank it the whole time without any problems whatsoever.

Some years ago there was a heatwave in France and many elderly people died of dehydration. I suspect that many of them died simply because due to the heat they could not cope going out shopping and dared not drink the tap water. Sorry, I have no facts and figures to back up my theory.

That's a post to my heart. I'm since a long time opposed to bottled water where it is not an absolute necessity. Tests in the UK have also shown that bottled water can be contaminated with all kinds of dirty and unhealthy things and what gets me really fuming is bottled 'designer water'.

The "no water bottle" rule is starting to gain a foothold in the US.  I hope it works.  I now use a corn-starch-based "plastic" resusable cup, which is not only cool (and keeps my water cold), but eco-friendly.  Great post....Mal

Bottled water is so wasteful! I think it is wonderful an entire community is taking action! I can only imagine how wonderful it was to have clean water for consumption! Shelly

If we all stopped buying it, there'd be no need for a ban.
It's funny really, that people buy so much of it. It's only tap water, but unlike what comes from our faucet it may not be tested and treated for impurities.

Encouraging you to post your URLs was merely 'enlightened self-interest'; your articles are very worthwhile reading and should be known to a much wider readership.

I remember in Calcutta my husband's family only had running water for part of the day. There was a big tank in the bathroom where they stored it in between whiles; they boiled all their drinking water. That was the situation 27 years ago at any rate.

Thanks Nita for your support and have a good day.

I did read about this news item in the papers. What you experienced in Odessa is a reality in India too--we have either water purifiers or buy bottled water--the quality of the latter is sometimes suspect, and of course, it adds to the garbage. Thanks Betty for your very kind and generous comment on my post--it was your encouragement really that made me post the urls! I'm grateful that you made the time to go through the articles; thanks again. Have a good day. Nita.
