What's gone is gone.
After such a close and committed relationship it takes time to recover. A first love is unforgettable. We cannot possess other people, so when a friend or a lover retreats we have to accept it and try to avoid too much bitterness. As you say yourself you must live your own life and do want you want to do without always doing what othe people expect of you. You write with great passion and clarity.

Sometimes we give and give and give and then we are betrayed by those we love most, and of-course it hurts so much, but always be proud of what you gave and for being the good and better person, and as you said, forgiveness is a priceless and timeless gift. Also, never stop your heart from loving another person or "vow" not to let yourself fall in love ever again or give your heart for another because one person was not deserving - always continue to do the right thing even if you've been met with the wrong in return.
