I think the cat may be able to figure out a way to stick around...
like sam, has commented, he seems to think of the rectory as home, so I hope whoever figures all this out is a cat lover and will simply take him in..

A can of fish, expensive cat food in tins, those things make them go into
the cat trap and trip the door of it.....something very aromatic and fishy rich.....they are suckers for the good stuff.
My brother catches neighborhood cats constantly and their babies, to spay and neuter them and release them again. They are all feral, unless he catches the babies early enough.

I had a part siamese cat once that took a liking to the neighbor before they moved in and I could never get her back.

This reminds me of the time we moved to Italy and we could not take our pet rabbit with us. Trying to find a home for the creature was the no.1 problem. Only the zoo was prepared to take it with open arms; probably because they planned to feed it to the tigers. In the end one of my colleagues took pity on us and adopted it. I hope, you manage to catch the poor creature.

I love your description of Melchi, and your kind heart to animals. My ex-husband used to say I was "The Great Mimi, saving the world one kitty cat at a time".
