Re:
Because a nation's leader is popular abroad it does not necessarily mean that he/she enjoys the same support at home. Thinking back on it Gorbachev was idealized in the West, but he was less than popular at home. In spite of all the glamor and prestige a post like that must be one of the unenviable jobs in the world.

It's amazing to me that some Americans are irritated that he would plug Chicago for the Olympics.  Wouldn't anyone?  I'm sure Bush would have plugged Dallas given the chance, and who could blame him?

So glad to hear that his visit went well, and that he was well received.  His poll numbers are about 50/50 here right now.  Interesting how vastly different those numbers are country to country.  I believe once the health care debates have settled down, and we get to the real work of implementing whatever plan, we'll see more accurate opinion polls one way or another.

Chicago's not in the running.
Latest news is that it's either Rio or Madrid.

I watched the news last night before going to bed but I dont think I heard a thing about the Presidents trip, but I did on the national news a few days ago, I am not sure his popularity is that great here in the US.  I really have no emotions one way or another about him

Re: After the previous administration's inadequate speechifying
Yes, it's exactly the impression he gives us: a man of the people. One commentator said that his mixed background (Kenyan father, American mother and years spent in Indonesia) makes it easier for him to fit in a global world.

There was a Greenpeace action in Copenhagen today: activists tried to hang a banner from a roof. It said: 'Right city, wrong date.' By this they meant that they hope Obama will come to the climate conference, because without him it just will not succeed.

Officially he's President only of the U.S.A. unofficially he's everybody's President.

A good presentation makes all the difference. By the way I too have a list of places to be visited before I die. Have a good weekend!

After the previous administration's inadequate speechifying
and a pattern of what seemed to me to be deliberate attempts to antagonize, it gives me hope to see our new president mending fences through diplomacy and speaking in full and eloquent sentences. From my perspective we are better represented to the world by this man of the people than we ever were by the man from big oil. Thank you for your report on the situation.

There was some coverage of Michelle Obama's speech on TV yesterday; she did speak well! And of course I loved seeing Oprah! Have a good weekend!
