Happened in Iraq, Saddam was our guy, until he started believing he was in control, then the powers that be were so distraught over his human rights abuses and weapons..
You've said it all, I'm afraid..such a mess, we humans eh?..

What's the solution to people behaving like people?
I agree, this is history, not starting with the US but starting with humanity. It was no different when the Pax Romana blanketed the Mediterranean world. Greed and ego dominate the power cycle: "Power corrupts."
Maybe, after we back off from military presence, we should be sending in the other side of our humanity in some form like the Peace Corps, setting Americans to work at helping in the rebuilding of the structure of life in peacetime.
