Timmy Tales
My ancestors came through Ellis Island: They worked the dirt to make a living they did not expect to be given $1,500 per month per child, food stamps and the jobs of the men in the very neighborhoods they have taken over. A town 7 miles from my home has been litterely taken over by mostly illegal immigrants. We have one of the highest unemployment areas in the country. We are not opposed to doing the jobs we can't get them. Illegal elderly women are receiving as much as three times what I receive for social security and they did not pay anything in and do not have to pay taxes on that. What part of right do others not understand.

My Grandparents came through Ellis Island in 1900. They were always thankful and grateful to be here, and so very patriotic, but they never really ever forgot the love they had for the land of their birth. I watched them love both places.

I too am confused at some of the thinking. I am sure that you had to jump through some hoops to become a citizen, and I see that you speak the language. Welcome

I wonder what those people from Ellis Island would think about this happening today.

Indeed Amen to this and it could be Australia and I don't believe that
the USA, Canada and Australia have welcomed people from all over the world.....Australia has literally hundreds of ethnic languages to deal with, .........but all we ask is that these people accept their new country or the country that their parents/grandparents chose as their own. I believe that flag burning should be a jail offence.

The letter is at once factual yet one-sided...
it ignores literally the millions of immigrants that immigrated to Western countries from non-Western countries, didn't demand any rights, but prospered, and helped others prosper, based on their exemplary work-ethic, and dedication to their families & professions. I happen to be one of them, immigrating from India to America decades ago, among literally hundreds of thousands like me in the Western world today. I can't help feel appalled at the ignorant/one-sided comments being made by people, even so called educated ones, on both sides of this burning social issue in many Western countries. Yet these same educated people don't see a role for themselves injecting some rationality in this over-heating argument by commenting based on hopefully their more educated view of the world.

Tim, who wouldn't feel a rush of patriotism reading this letter. But the letter is flawed. It isn't a question of either allow immigrants to be loyal to two countries, or tear down the Statue of Liberty. True, a few years back some immigrant rallies in California were punctuated with mexican flags as a misguided way of protest. That stopped as soon as leaders in the movement for immigration reform explained to those groups how such flag waving was misinterpreted in America. Yesterday hundreds of thousands of protesters filled the streets and there was no waving of the Mexican flags!
Then at the end, summing up with the illogical conclusion that what illegal immigrants are asking congress to do is dismantle America.
This racist, dishonest and illogical type of argument is beneath contempt.

Indeed, AMEN to that excellent letter! And while we're at it, and though we have no Statue of Liberty, much of what this lady say applies to Canada as well!
