- Go to Why Teachers Put Down Students
It is a very controversial subject. But in my opinion education is a triangular process involving teachers, students and parents

Some teachers are really bad at that.
It's as if they think it is a necessary part of teaching.

Wow did you ever hit the nail right on the head, here. Having been either a witness or having experienced a bit of that...you are so correct. If the student doesn't like the teacher or the reverse is true...there is no learning happening there. Ultimately it's the student that pays the price.

this is a VERY important topic
teachers that put down students have no business being teachers. However, they are only human, but I wish they would be thrown away. Some teacher's that put down students have such a huge affect on a big portion of that student's life. I was lucky never to be put down, but I did have bad teacher, and also I had some wonderful teachers.
When you send your kids to school you should not have to worry about them being abused by the teachers

Sometimes when these put downs are so frequent, it becomes a habit even with the student and later on as adults. Wonderful write FSI and I'm glad you smile a bit at my blog.

Back in the old days teacher's putting down students was a way of life for them and the reason so many like myself never graduated high school even. Teacher's are much better educated and trained today I think.....

I have always been a quiet, social phobic person.
The kids picked on me like crazy, but most teachers just left me alone.
The one that stands out in my mind the most is my kindergarten teacher who yelled at me in front of the whole class and threatened to spank me unless I started talking to her immediately.

Put downs are counter-productive...
some root causes are insecurity, immaturity, jealousy, lack of sensitivity training for teachers..I totally concur with yours & Sam's comments. If you think you can positively influence some resolution of this important issue, be it thru writing / exemplifying, you'll be making a big contribution to society, you have my best wishes & blessings! - Ash

It is undeniably wrong to put a student down! This brought so many memories of the teacher's lounge! My goodness, a student that was labeled would get knocked around in the lounge! I agree that each point you made could be expounded on! The bottom line is to treat other the way we would like to be treated! And another crucial point is that over time the 'class clown' as it were begins to believe the behavior he displays is what is expected! Put downs only serve to undermine the real problem(s)! A very thought provoking post! sam

Teachers are people-
J In the same way as others in roles that deal with people teachers have to be sensitive and feel out their audience individually really. Humor and wit work yea. They add to the understanding of the presentation. However Don Rickles was and still is a popular insult standup comic that insults individuals in the audience. He would make a lousy teacher. I am always totally baffled when I hear of teachers
degrading their students. wtf Didn't they become teachers to help children learn and to help them become great adults?? That's what I would think, any way. I know some kids are disrespectful hellians, but, still...
