I'm afraid that anything I might add to this subject would probably be tendentious.

Re: Trip
BC-A...could be, although, considering Obama's political mind, it seems like a ploy to entice US/Irish votes.

It is time to gear up for re-election so it's anyone's guess as to the true motive! sam

Re: 550 businesses
Yes, Justi,
We need them: but I doubt Obama's trip will bring them.
His time would be better spent encouraging rather than discouraging U.S. free enterprise with his tax and spend policies.

We could use 550 US businesses in the US today.

Re: I don't know, maybe he should stay in his office and look at Ireland from
VictoriaP, yours are noteworthy observations! Still, it's been that way for some time. U.S. economic ties are little at risk. So, the timing of Obama's trip to Ireland seems political.

I don't know, maybe he should stay in his office and look at Ireland from
his window?
Or maybe....
"• US companies employ 100,000 in Ireland
• US companies contribute 33% of the country's corporate tax take
• There are 550 US companies in Ireland, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis
• There are 200 Irish companies in the US, according to the BEA
• US investment stock in Ireland was valued at €122bn in 2009 – almost five per cent of its global investment
So there will be huge expectations when it comes to the economic dividend of the two State visits – the US and the UK are already Ireland's most important trading partners."
