I think your mother could have understood, and possibly even have been
a help to you through this.
Being a single mother, I can certainly understand her ability to continue on with life.
Unlike my kids fathers, I can't just stop and shutdown whenever I feel like it... I have children that depend on me. And though I have had problems, shutting down is not an option, as I have a duty as a mother, like it or not.
In your case, with grown children, you wouldn't have that.. so it would take other things in your life that would have to be very very important to you to prevent you from just shutting down and giving in to despair.
Yes, your mother was a strong woman, and likely she had it much easier than you because she had children to care for which gave her a reason to carry on the best that she could. It is likely that you and your siblings are what saved her from giving up and drowning in despair.
