Sometimes a slightly coated truth is what's required with friends and family.

JPT...yes, one really has to be careful...
Sometimes the one we think will keep the truth confidential has the biggest mouth of all...it really becomes a perplexing question: "Who do you trust?"..

Probably best not to volunteer all details with too many , at least this has been my experience.

It seems to me that the problem is in the "nothing but the truth". We humans seem to have a need to embellish.

Well doc I never tell the truth, no hardly ever. I put it down to my youthful training.
'Have you any bananas?' "No sorry,' 'Tin of Salmon?" "Sorry,' My life would not have been worth living if I had told the truth. One of my brothers said recently ;'you never tell the truth." "I do,' I protested. I had done it again. You could get away with murder.

Problem is, we seldom know the "whole" truth.
These days, conjecture builds itself into a story -- exampel: HSN news 10% facts, 90% guesswork, logical deduction, assumption and "profiling." You're right-- people disbelieve what you tell them about yourself. Maybe they think you're putting yourself down for some reason, and believe it's their duty to make you feel better about yourself. If I say I'm fat, which is obviously the case, they almost always correct me. Wonder what they'd say if I'd say I had to run out and buy a pie because I want to gain a few pounds.
