For the most part self-publishers do not do a good job of editing their work.
I was given one book from a friend that was so bad on the editing that I could not make myself read it.

it is sometimes difficult as a writer to write for the American market
because I am Australian. I use words and sentences that make no sense unless you are Australian and then have to edit big time.

No, probably not. It seems that a lot of language is left up to interpretation. When I write, I usually express myself on paper ( or the screen, if you will ) the way I would speak, so it appears as though I'm talking to the reader instead of at them. As far as words with conflicting meanings, consider this: the words alter and change are supposed to be synonyms, and yet, altering your pants and changing your pants are two completely different things! Go figure!
