As a general rule, Social Media seems to be following the usual web plan.
If you remember banner ads, you will recognize the same basic marketing plan. Even if you do not, the point is not to be "on" Facebook, but to run your ads on Facebook. Not that I do not spend way too much time on the former rather than the latter, but I would rectify that if I had the money to spend/waste on this particular advertising channel.
In rough outline, the social media model is:
1. Get a lot of people to reveal marketable facts about themselves on the web site; and
2. Sell advertising to those trying to market goods and services to demographics defined according to those marketable facts.
People who are "on" a social media site are, in this model, customers. They are not expected to be advertisers and are, deliberately I expect, not given the opportunity to benefit from the relationships they forge on the site. Customers buying amongst themselves would take away from advertising revenue. This dynamic then places the freelancer at a disadvantage. As with the banner ads, the main if not only beneficiary of advertising on a social media site – besides the site itself – is the large corporation with extra cash to spend on marketing "experiments". Think about how much money you have spent on products promoted on social media sites and you get an idea of the size of the customer base in cash. Then multiply by your percentage share of that base from putting a few ads on the site...

I'm only on Facebook. I remember when it was just for college networking. I'm amazed at how it's grown.

I'm much fonder of Blogit. Facebook is great when my
grandkids post photos of the new baby, and one or two people there consistently post thought-provoking observations or stories, but so much of it is just an extension of stupid arguments and family drama that would better be kept offline.

No I don't see myself on any of these. I would love to make
some money with the Internet but they all try to lead me to Face Book and such and I can't go there...family reasons actually.....as you say, who taught my Mother is what sons and soon Grandchildren would be saying.

While it does make some sense to me for those who like it, I don't like it, and I'm not taking part! I don't need to see my face on Facebook, and twittering is strictly for the birds...
