I am surprised to find the online dictionaries don't have the word, Polava is a pointless waste of time or a mess, the closest synonim is "farce". I didn't realise it was such an unusual word.
Wow the change from Manchester to Canada must have been a big one and I guess you will have ended up with a few odd words from your mum

I especially loved the poem with the use of the word 'polava'. I don't know the meaning but my mother used it a lot like" 'oh don't make such a "'polava'" about everything. So there I guess, don't make such a fuss about everything. Me 'Mum' was from Flixton, Nr Manchester, England. Always been proud of my British heritage and visited a few times back in the 50's.

I can remember the days when a polava might be in order for me. Now I just smile and close my eyes to it, and let someone else worry and fret.
