my parents strongly believed in spare the rod spoil the child except for 2 of us...of course those 2 are the most messed up people....one is an alcoholic and the other is a wife beater and both of them uses anybody and everybody

Parents sometimes have part of a good idea
but they think it's all they need. My dad was a firm believer in self-discipline. So he disciplined the hell out of us. We never acquired an iota of self-discipline, because we never needed to. And if we had, on some level, we'd have been letting him win. Couldn't have that! It was a war that ended thirty years before I realized it was over.
