I know little about roof heaters except I had a tile roof so I worried about operating costs and heater costs and I worried about them as a fire hazard.

Thank you, Justi. I am safe and the damage can be repaired.
The scenery is absolutely awesome. If you lived here, you would be used to it. Maybe you can get some pictures when your snow arrives? Hope it doesn't last too long. I know it's more difficult when it happens so rarely.

Checked out the damage in daylight, Sam - it's bad, but fixable so far.
AT least neither me nor the doggies were standing under it when it let go, so that's a plus!

No Wiley - a good idea but my roof is very steep and covered in tin.
The access with a ladder is impossible. I'm thinking of installing those wires that melt the snow regulary.... do you know anything about those?

I thought it had something to do with the weather, Pat_B
but I wonder now if it wasn't a site problem.

One thing for sure, FSI, you would admire its beauty.
Freshly fallen snow sure can make everything look pristine.

No, Naut, it is not accessible except to stand under it,
something my son warned me NOT to do. A good thing too. When it came down, there was no pardon!! Like the HABS when they went for the Leafs. DO you happen to know who is first in the Division??

LOL - whatever it was having it seems it wasn't selective, Kabu.
No rain here, and snowing again all day...but so beautiful!! In spite of the damage.

Broke all those icicles with the shovel, Jimmy
before the snow came roaring down.

My house is a great place, TAPS, and my roof is peaked steeply
and covered in tin, so no danger of it caving in. The gallery railing paid the price, but much less expensive to fix than a roof!!

Well, it came down and railing is demolished
but no-one is hurt, and worse things could happen. I have to admit that I swore loudly. We'll fix it in spring.

We have prayed for your safety and that of your house. That must be beautiful but all it brings with it is a bit much for me. We are to have some tomorrow and the next day, nothing like that, but some. We are smiling back at you because this too will pass. Love and hugs to you!

Can you not buy a "roof rake" ? That you could make reach the roof from 10' ladder and just drop the balde on the roof and pull backward.

P.S. Blogit was full of hiccups yesterday for an hour or so.
I just thought it was something local to me until I read the comments here.

My goodness that is a whole lot of snow. I don't know what I would do if my town was expected to get it through Tuesday.

First: Is it possible to get access to the gallery fro the outside, maybe by ladder? If so, one could try shovelling the snow off it and lighten the load without standing below that possible avalanche from the roof...Second: The Blogit site gave me trouble too yesterday. At first I thought it was my computer...Third: The Leafs slipped up a bit, and the fifth goal was into an empty net. Anyway, we're still up 2:1 in games, hehehe...

That's strange. This website was giving me trouble yesterday too. Not sure if it was connected to the weather or not! Those icicles look mighty dangerous . . . !

Too bad that something so beautiful can be so destructive. Every day now we hear of some roof coming down from weight of snow--mostly flat-roof buildings/businesses. I hope your gallery will be okay. It is such a great place at your house.
