My mother has an answering machine. I am not familiar with them. I myself do not have one, as voicemail suffices for me.

When one calls my son we hear him saying 'Hello? (long pause) Hello? (another long pause) Oh, you wanted to speak to us, but we're not home, so leave a message'. By this time the caller has already been yelling into the phone 'Hello?? Hello? You can't hear me?' He has caught so many with that message!

I hate recording messages for voicemail - it always takes me 3 or 4 tries. Once, I got frustrated after the 5th failed attempt, and left the darn thing as it was. For more than a week, my callers heard "Hi, you've reached *cough* *curse* *click*...BEEP.
I've since fixed it, but the memory still rankles.
