Re: And how long would this burn out last, Kabu?
well it won't if you don't have some real down time or change jobs. It seems that you need time at home all Summer with play.I know that you don't enjoy tripping around is why I suggest home with the doggies all Summer.

I did read this yesterday and it made me worry about you, and be sad. I didn't comment because I couldn't think of anything to say that would really help. I know what it is like to have burn out.

The financial impact isn't good even in accounting right now:
because I can't seem to do enough of it to make it worthwhile. It was so easy for me even if I never really liked it, so I took the less challenging road at the time. Now is the time to pay the piper, you think?

More than likely, MsJudy
But bills need to be paid, so sick leave is not an option. I have to find a way around it.

Chocolates!!!

Unfortunately I can't make accounting work for me in half hours. It takes me that long to start focusing, then I'm ready to quit again.

And how long would this burn out last, Kabu?
It has been going on for a bit now and seems to be getting worse instead of better.

I've tried that, Justi, but an hour turns to two, to three, to four, etc...
And I just feel as if I could never run a column of figures through my head again!! You don't need to ask if I want you to pray for me. It would be greatly appreciated.

Oh boy, I know it well, that feeling of ennui that tinges everything with a kind of dish- watery greyness...Yes, you need a vacation, some airiness in your life, plenty of really good music, and maybe even a light-hearted affair...

I agree with the others. At one point in my life I thought about a career in accounting. After thinking of the redundancy, I chose another career path. There are suggestions to be made but you must consider the financial impact of some careers.

Being that the zoning out only happens to you when you aproach accounting I may go out on a limb and say that , as you probably already have figured out, there is probably some kind of negative association that you have made to that particular subject. It could be that you feel that your working at that is keeping you from something you would rather do... or that you resent having to work at all... Or... as was said here before... you might just be what they call "burned out" which is something that happens quite often to those who work at mentally demanding tasks. Menopause might be playing a role as well. You mentioned that you've been at it forever" :-) ( I know, it seems like that to me too loll) Well, when our hormones start decreasing mental function does as well, if only temporarily , ussually is memory that suffers most , but concentration and focus also can diminish considerably and since your work in accounting probably requires both, you would feel it there the most. Our brain has amazing escape mechanisms and perhaps yours is trying to run away from the effort it takes to do the accounting by going into an idol state and therefore making you "zone out"... The solution (s) are self evident :-) Rest! Give yourself a mental vacation... or if you can't completely stay away from work, reward yourself with something you really really want everytime you spend time working... Eventually you might change the negative association you have made with a positive one of getting a reward... Try it! Good luck darling xoxoxo

Numbers have always been dull as dishwater to me.
I've done bookkeeping, light accounting, etc., when I had to, but it always bored me. I think what's got you now is the after-effects of the past month or six weeks, which has been stressful. My recommendation: a box of really good chocolates. Any time you can stick with the obnoxious chore for half an hour, you get to stop and enjoy a bonbon... Even if it doesn't work, the chocolate is lovely.

Burn out darling. I remember ...and I loved my job....I collected my tax papers from my last nursing job, looked at them and said..I am finished...I cannot do this anymore. I still miss it but enough can be enough. Wonder what else you could do for a change.

I always struggle to pay attention and get stuff done when it's a task I don't enjoy (housework being my number one pet peeve, accounting a close second). My mind simply refuses to focus properly on tasks it doesn't enjoy. A career change sounds like something that might be good for you. But if you do resort to banging your head, I can recommend a good contractor to help with the drywall...
Glad to hear you're doing well - I have been worried about you since hearing of the awful happenings in your neck of the woods!

No matter how far behind you are give it up for an hour do not think of it at all and sit down and write, see if the same things occures. Do you want me to pray for You?

For some reason, the words "burn out" came to mind after reading this. You may not necessarily need a career change as much as you just may need a major break from accounting, at least for a while. And whatever you do, don't bang your head against the wall! Not only is the dry wall a pain in the butt to repair, but that massive bruise on your forehead probably won't go away anytime soon either . . .
