I can't say I ever remember my Father being in a black mood or feeling that I should keep out of his way. He had a quick temper but it was soon over. Of course I do not know what my Mother felt, well I do but that is a different ball game.

Great post. So much you say here is so familiar to me. Even though I loved my dad deeply, I made myself scarce when he was in a bad mood. Also, it seemed to me that when my husband was angry, he would take his anger out on our oldest son. If I tried to interfere, it only made things worse for son.

That sounds very much like my household when I was growing up! We would quickly decipher dad's demeanor when he walked through the door, and if it appeared there was some kind of dark cloud hovering over his head, we would indeed scatter! Yes, the wisdom your mother acquired over the years can never be taught in any school . . .

Many children live in families with fathers like yours. They are protected by the moms and wives. You are wise to follow her lead. this is the true meaning of the good out weigh the bad. I am the opposite. I confront those with bad tempers and manners in due time or help the person who is covering to gain strength to confront. Each family is different and what works for one will not work in another.
