Poor Flicker :-(  I love those birdies... so elegant with their little red bandanna on the back of the neck and little dots in their belly... You know what?  When I lived in Montana there was one that drove me crazy with the pecking on the tree outside my bedroom window but come winter  he would disappear until the next spring :-)  Your poor birdie  was probably hurt already when the cat got him... he would not have been able to catch him I think  They are smart and so quick!   Like you said it was its time.  Your doggie was doing what came naturally to him.  BTW he is so cute!  Be well Adhor  xoxoxo

Yes, Rumor, including us humans.

Now I'm watching my hummingbirds, TAPS

because cats seem to get up anywhere, and that I would NOT be happy about!

adnohr...

Nature can be very cruel at times, but as you say, whatever kind of creatures are involved, including us humans, when its timeto go, its time....

Actually Dora is more dangerous to wildlife here than Smooch

because she's out roaming, whereas Smooch had me behind him - altho' that didn't do the bird any good this time.

Exactly MsJudy. Got away from one, then hit by the other. It was time.

I agree, Justi. Kittie was only doing what comes natural,

but the poor bird was shrieking, so I had to do something. Nature won.

It's from the woodpecker family, CCT, and is was an adult male

Flickers often hunt for grubs on the ground, and Dora is an excellent hunter. I expect poor bird wasn't paying attention. Too bad - they are very pretty birds. Somehow Dora gets out at night, although my grandson swears he brings her in when he retires for the night. Hmmmmm

It was sad - but as we all know - that's life, Jimmy.:

I know, Jay - cats show their love with those gifts, but I didn't care

to be witness to it. Dora had no hard feelings - she was right back upstairs with me when the whole episode ended.

Umm - but it didn't make it, FSI.

Smooch finished the job the cat started, unfortunately.

There is a big yellow cat here that belongs to one of the tenants.  They let it out unleashed even though they are not supposed to in this complex.  It quite often sits for long periods beneath our deck because it is fascinated by all the birds we feed.  I would hate it if the cat got my flicker, even though it is a beautiful cat.

tis why of course that Graysome is a spoilt prisoner in the house and that is fine for he is spoilt....but doggies do what they must do and it is tough on the wild life. we have lots of those lovely Flickers here, they come in the winter for the feed i put out...those suet feeders.

Poor little Flicker, but you are right, when it is your time it is your time no matter what!

I remember many moons ago when I had a sweet little mother to be cat who was little more than a kitten and a waif that came to the door already pregnant and I kept her. She loved me and one morning she was pawing at the door when I opened it she had brought my favorite cardinal to me as a love offering. I cried and at the same time I did not chastise her, she did what was the best thing she knew to do. Perhaps we have become so attached to both pets and wild animals we can't allow them to be themselves.

I don't know what a Flicker is Adnohr perhaps it was a young one, It would have been nice to have saved it, but it apparently was not very strong after its first ordeal. People have been asked here to keep cats inside at night to cut down on bird kills. My cat does not chase birds , but I shall not have another and I will install a a cat deterent by the bird feeding area.

That's really a shame. No, neither the cat nor the dog really did anything wrong. They were just succumbing to their basic instincts. I know that these types of things happen in nature all the time, but in a way it's still somewhat sad . . .

Having cats of my own, and usually a dog too, I know that from time to time the cats will get out and a bird will be caught, and the dog will chase them when it can. I worry so over our population of quail, but that is just what cats do. We humans, over the centuries have tried to remove this instinct from our feline friends, but it is too deep inside the instincts of the hunter...God bless your heart for trying. I have learned over the years that cats like to pay their rent from time to time, they have left me such payment as a seagull (our state bird), a pheasant (out of season) and miscellaneous rodents and small feathered friends placed on the front step...I think they do this because they love us...Thanks for the smiles.

I am glad to read that the bird made it out alright...I find it always interesting to read about your dogs.

Those little dramas almost never end well. A cat is always a hunter,

and while dogs can be trained, they still have a bit of wolf in their hearts. I hope the flicker didn't leave a nest full of hungry hatchlings behind.
