A bit of dry wit then, is it, 2902? An unpleasant and frightening experience that you have ended with a tentative smile. I really don't want to miss the poem where you express how happy you are for having conquered it.

What an effect! It starts out seeming so serious, but it ends on a humorous note!

Re: Kabu, those two weeks in ICU rank with the most miserable
I have ever spent. The thing I dreaded most was the breathing mask that, I'm told, was to make sure I kept breathing. To me, though, it was as if the nurse was literally smothering me each time she put it on. I fought it. The rhythm of breathing it used was out of synch with mine, in addition to making me hiccup at the end of each breath. The experience terrified me. At one point I wanted to leave all the paraphernalia at the hospital and just go home, no matter what. My son was in tears and pleaded with me not to do that, to think of playing with his little son and daughter. I cried, too, but said okay. The light tone of this poem in no way reflects how I felt then.

Re: CC, the tough part I still haven't done is writing the poem that
adequately expresses my happiness at still being here four months later.

Re: DrJ, the connection may well have to do with a certain level
of fear, I think, but I have absolutely no memory of what happened those 24 hours. None.

Re: Yes, Jay, I guess we've all had friends and relatives in
deathbed situations like that. In my case, it wasn't a joke, really. After two weeks in the cardiac ICU, I was being transferred to a rehab hospital and had to see to packing my things that had been stuffed in a plastic bag two weeks before. When we unknotted the bag, it was immediately clear that my admission had not been "without incident." It was pretty disgusting, really, and the hospital - usually very heads-up - had clearly dropped the ball om this one, laundry-wise. It made for an interesting rejoinder, though, to people asking what it was like to be, as the doctors assured me later, that close to death.

Well one usually recovers from that, but it feels like the worst is warmed up.

My father had a stroke. The doctors said he would not survive. He laid in that bed for four months not moving a muscle, only squeezing my hand for yes and no. I was with him the night he died, just us two. He got this strange look on his face. He rose and called his mothers name. Then he laid back down, smiled a big smile and left us. Your poem reminded me of that night Bob. I know you meant it for a smile, and I am smiling...Thank you.
