Re: Re: Re: Re: Ciel

Historically speaking, what happened was called The Little Ice Age.  Instead of growing grapes for wine, there was ice-skating on the Thames, and Winterfest held in the middle of the frozen river.

The reason was the failure of the North Atlantic Conveyer, an ocean current, which means the Gulf Stream failed to bring southern warm waters up past your shores, to moderate the climate.  It was a rough time for Europe, that lasted around 700 years.

As it happens, that current is not doing so well now because of... wait for it... global warming.

Re: Re: Re: Ciel

I remember not long ago a bitterly cold Easter. I do think things are becoming more

unstable but we just have not lived long enough to really know Ciel. The Romans grew grapes here and folk are doing it again. What happened in-between is rather difficult to surmise.

Re: Re: Ciel

There was the Easter Blizzard of... I forget what year, when I was a kid in New Jersey. I guess that puts it in the middle to late 60s. And here, spring in the Springs is pretty much unpredictable.  The rest of this week, however, we are promised warmth and sunshine!

Good advice, especially that business of not planting anything in ice, since on this day, April 8, in the year 2014 A.D., I still have about an inch of ice on large portions of my lawn in the back of the house...

Re: Ciel

Well Archie rang me up last night to say a frost had been forecast I told him would take a chance only the sweet peas are really out in the real world. They are quite tough though.

It is 7am and  beautiful gleams of sunshine are are licking the greenhouses so the heaters will stop for today. I only keep the heaters at about 60f as electricity is expensive. I don't know how your weather system works but I have known it bitterly cold at Easter.

Re:

Well Kabu I have just had those tiny begonia plugs this week and they go straight into a heated frame for at least 6 weeks. I do wish you had a greenhouse but it would have to be a strong one and it means more work.

Re: Taps

Folk are always so impatient but the big stores take plants much too early each year and the plants have come from tropical conditions they never do much good.

Lots of good gardening advice here, and as a poem too.
It's too early to plant here.  More night freezes on the way.

I should print this out and post it by the door...

Tomorrow a spell of warm is promised, freezing nights done! I want to put the potted ones out into the sun, that has already melted this morning's snow.  There is a snap pea or a sweet pea reaching for the sun, about a foot long now. It is the one of the whole tray even trying.

There are other sproutings, too, some of which will likely turn out to be millet from the bird feeder.  And the nasturtiums, of course, going great guns! Every once in a while one flower on that goes to seed, and I let it, to collect later and plant again.

I could put them out now, the cold is past... tonight is not supposed to be so cold.

But what do forecasters know?  I will dig in and wait for tomorrow.

I love every tidbit of knowledge I can get about planting seeds Bro. Just so I can help Kabu with the planting as I sit on the deck to enlighten her.
