Re: DT
Naut, psychoanalysis is deterministic. I take that to mean elements (fears, guilt) determine decisions which can be irrational impulsive. Ergo, unconscious determines behavior. Look up determinism.

Okay, I'm very familiar with Freud's work, as well as that of many of his interpreters, e.g. Norman O. Brown, Rollo May, Herberts Marcuse, etc. etc., and I can assure you he never said the unconscious determines behaviour, though it may influence it, which is a hugely different matter. And the main reason that psychoanalysis has fallen out of favor is that it's an exceedingly lengthy process, often taking years, and hence is very expensive - few people can afford it...

Actually, I've read quite a bit of Milton Erickson's works as my cousin was his son's college roommate and he spent a lot of time with the family. He (cousin) found his work so fascinating that he wanted badly to share and discuss his works. Here is a vintage "schizophrenic joke" that Milton Erickson loved:
Question: What's the difference between a duck?
Answer: One leg is both the same.

One really needs to read all the major theorists and compare them. Then take from their theories what will work for you as a therapist and for you with your own problems. I doubt that there is one answer to everyone's problems...no of course not.

I've come to the conclusion that Freud was the pioneer,
but we have gone deeper into the wilderness of mentality since his time, and developed much better tools. I find cognitive therapies far more useful than psychotherapy. One of my most favored models of how the mind works, and how we can work with it is the Parts Model which I wrote about here: http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/CLRedding/622680
I recommend to you, also, the work of Milton Erickson. One of his books is called, And My Voice Will Go With You... His techniques look like a miracle for results, but in fact, it is really a powerful understanding of how the mind processes.

interesting post, i thought about it for awhile. i dont agree with either gentleman, freud or lang. i guess because i dont feel i fall into either catagory.
although i believe we need to examine why we do things, not to an extent that it drives us crazy. or do i believe we all fear death, which i believe is the next great adventure, dont worry i am not going to kill myself to get there sooner, i may still have more great adventuring here.
