Jonathan Haidt inThe Happiness Hypothesisasserted that gossip is essential to human survival. It helps us to socialize and keeps people in line because they want to try to avoid being gossiped about.
I say gossip gets bad when someone is trying to destroy another. When it reaches that level, it is dangerous.
