I think one does this in a kind of dream sequence, maybe some try it and regret their action, but it is too late. A bit different with pills.

I also don't look upon this as either. He obviously lost a terrible battle with some personal demons. Something tells me he had no idea what he was actually doing towards the end . . .

He seems to have been a very sick very depressed man.

I've always liked Unchained Melody.
I don't think of it as either.   The only viable option to the problem is more like what they are thinking at the time.

NO!

It's a wake up call to find a way to help those suffering from so much inner pain that they harm themselves to relieve it.
