We used to do that at a local lake using cardboard boats.
the trick was to coat them with wax before trying to row across the lake...

Hey, whatever floats your boat . . . or should I say pumpkin? And the only PVC's you'll find floating around our lakes are the ones left over from some plumbing job . . .
