Re: naut
people do not grow many heirlooms today, the flowers that are easy care reign. some of the oldies you would be hard pressed to find in gardens today. my mother at one time had an 18 inch waist, believe it or not, and not just when she was a baby.

Re: v1
roses are beautiful, especially if you have an heirloom and it has a scent.....they no longer smell, because they have been cross bred so much to get different colors, to make them less attractive to disease and insects.....i perfer the smell.

Re: adnohr
i watch alot of the old movies, 30's, 40's and 50's, the female stars were not skinny minnies, not like today, with flat stomaches and no curves, lololol i also notice their breasts how they shaped them into seperate rounded coming to a point breast. lol and i also wonder about the old maid, just how old is old?

That is really neat about the bachelor buttons. I did not know that tale for them.

Jean
I had no idea of the origins of the name 'bachelor buttons' - in fact, I'm not even sure what they look like! My knowledge of things botanical is woeful, but I shall investigate! What's Google for, eh? And the weight-gain ad sure sounds funny today...

I like the idea of carnations, they are cheaper than roses. And I love going through
family type archives.

I used to have....who am I kidding, it's around her some place....a pamphlet about the language of flowers, that goes through traditional and modern 'definitions' - I don't recall how modern the modern ones were! I also have illustrations of the language of the fan...again, it's somewhere.....live used to be really complex for a certain class of folks, and just really hard for all the others.

Isn't it so true? But really, most men will say that they like some meat on a woman - the skinny-minny is just for pictures in magazines. Interesting about the flower. The relationship I have with flowers means I'd stay an old maid, for sure!! Why would the men be called bachelors but the women old maids, I wonder?
