Re:
Oh, of course, chuck, just as there were a few movies I may have added to the list ( and a few I would have probably deleted ). It's all opinions! People have favorite TV shows, foods, types of clothing, music, etc. No one is right, or wrong. But I still say, whatever you claim to be your favorite(s), simply add "in my opinion," and there won't be any arguments . . .

Remember everyone has his own opinion. If your friend has the means he would have picked this John Wayne movie as one of the best 100 movies.

Re:
You're right, C C T, but it really doesn't take a lot of logic to simply decide what one likes, and what one dislikes. There are many things others like that I will never understand, but, to each his own, as they say. As long as we don't have to argue over it . . .

Well, Naut, whether you 'love' hockey or not, at least we agree on wrestling. And I will always do the same thing - proclaim what I like, and what I don't, based on my own opinions. I will never speak in absolutes. Pointless arguments? Absolutely! It's all subjective . . .

Yes well, I suppose it is alright think these things, but more difficult to express the reason why is is so. I am sure you always use logic Jimmy. It is difficult for some to do so.

You're right of course! All arguments about the 'Greatest This-and-That' are completely pointless and tedious! I will on occasion proclaim what I like best, and what I hate - for example, I hate wrestling, LOL...

Re:
You're old auntie-in-law, TAPS, was wonderfully wise! She was able to say her piece, albeit quietly, and still avoid an argument! Comedian Dennis Miller used to end every one of his comedic rants with "Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong," a sure-fire way of avoiding arguments or confrontations. More people should be like that . . .

Re:
I understand, adnohr. At times, it does depend on what the claim originally was. Some are more ridiculous than others, and are not worthy of even a second glance. But every once in a while, someone will say something that, for whatever reason, you simply cannot let go! Wrestling over hockey? It's no contest . . .

Re:
I have a feeling, Kabu, that age may have a factor in making that choice not to argue and simply walk away. That friend who made the John Wayne claim used to be able to draw me into some unbelievable arguments, usually over the silliest things, until I finally wised up! Keeping my blood pressure down is now a more important priority than winning a dumb, pointless argument . . .

Re:
I'm sure of it, Annicita. The trick is, knowing how to handle them! Every once in a while, someone makes one of these ridiculous claims and somehow actually finds a way of drawing me into an argument, although I'd really, really rather not! But sometimes, just sometimes . . .

Re: What Krisles said...
Very good, strat! More emphatic delivery does not mean more factual information delivered . . . that's almost bumper sticker material. However, considering the rapid decline of our nation's collective I.Q.'s, I doubt many people would fully understand or appreciate it . . .

Re:
It is indeed, FSI, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating to hear people making certain claims like that! If either of them had said at some point "in my opinion," it would have been such a non-issue. But when they don't . . .

Re: Jimmy
You're absolutely right, Krisles. When someone says Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president or that Mercury is the closest planet to the sun, those are facts. But when it comes to the likes and dislikes of things like movies or sporting events, they are all opinions! Even though that list of Top Movies was just another group's opinion, I had to share it with my friend just to bust his chops a little! Like they say, opinions are like butts . . . everybody's got one!

An old auntie-in-law that came from a family of arguers was my favorite person at family get togethers. She refused to argue like everyone else seemed to be doing. Whenever someone made a statement like that to her, she would say, "You may be right," and under her breath would say to herself, "...but I doubt it."

IMHO, hockey is WAY before wrestling!!!
I've bitten my tongue a few times....then again I've also excercised it on occasion when HHO was in direct conflict with MHO.

I had ...never see them now...a family of cousins who needed to win every afgument so never gave anyone e;se's opinion a chance. It was better to walk away and let them have the floor. I agree with you, if all that will happen is an argument then let it go...and avoid their company.

See, I think everything coming out of anyone's mouth is their opinion - it's a given; and even list like you mention of the movies aren't "facts" but just those particular critics' opinions.....and who in the heck made them the experts? The qualifiers in our conversations could get ridiculous if we didn't all chill and recognize we are all just stating our opinions.....the silly IMHO and JMHO only came into being recently because folks have forgotten that.
