It's misplaced teenage rebellion.
Teenagers rebel to distinguish themselves from their parents and peers. It's a way of saying "I'm my own person. I'm independent".....but the lesson that needs to be learned is that TRUE independence isn't just doing the opposite of what you are told.....it's being able to make up your OWN mind about something regardless of what others think.....whether that puts you in agreement with them, or in opposition. If you are still being manipulated by the likes and dislikes of others - even via refusal to conform - then you have not yet achieved independence.

That is the exact reason why I changed it to what people say I should do! I have no problem taking orders from my superiors. Only suggestions from peers--or advice from anyone be they superiors or not.
I've never gotten in trouble with the police, or in school, or at work, or, for the most part, with my parents.
Most people think I am a goody two shoes--well, they used to. Don't think they do anymore after some of the crap I've pulled in bars and elsewhere. hehe

My inability to take direction has caused me to end up in jail...
beaten up, kicked out of the Army and finally on the edge of liver failure sleeping on the beach...Sometimes, well usually, taking direction is easier and better. Learning things the hard way is overrated...

I also dislike it sometimes when people tell me what to do,
so I understand what you mean, heh.
