It depends on the story. The culprit can make sense in many different ways. The key is to have the viewer or reader be able to look back and go, "Whoa, what he/she said or did there makes it all come together."

Well, I really liked this story a lot! I prefer the murderer to be a complete surprise to whomever my wildest theories may have suggested that it is! In other words, I like the mystery writer to out-think me!
