A spouse does have an influence on the public impression of a public figure. I would say the same thing about the children. I do not believe a politician's family life is the be all, end all, though. If that were the case, people would not have as much as a problem as they did with George Bush (Laura Bush was a great first lady) while Obama would get even more flak for having a wife who lives like a 1 percenter.
