I can relate to your story... I had a similar story where an ex fell ill, and I did in fact reach out to him. He appreciated it and I felt much better. Why not do it?

How nicely you have told us your story, but it's sad. And to me, some form of contact with him would not be inappropriate. I am sorry to hear he is ill. I hadn't heard of that disease.

Yes it is tough, A. It does seem to happen much more than it used to.
Although it was not always how it seemed. If he is not still married you could
visit him just for old times sake.
